Splitting Up the Prep & Cooking

The Cursing Gourmet Tip of the Day:

Do some food prep the morning of or the night before.

A problem many cooking haters (and even non-haters) have is that they just don’t want to come home after a long day of work and march directly into the kitchen for an hour… Or even a half hour! I totally get it.

But I heard a good piece of advice many times that can help with this issue… Prep ahead of time, like that morning or the night before.

For instance, I made a quick veggie curry last night. But I washed/chopped all the veggies in the morning. This included onion, carrots, broccoli, asparagus and snow peas.

So by the time dinner rolled around, all I had to do was season & sauté the veggies for a few minutes (except the snow peas, they go in at the end of the simmering), get my rice going in a separate pot, then dump my veggie broth and coconut milk in with the veggies, and let it all simmer for 15 minutes.

This is a great tactic especially for haters… Besides breaking up the consecutive minutes spent in the kitchen, psychologically you’re more inclined to make the meal when part of it is already in the works, rather than bailing on the meal altogether, muttering “F it, I’ll just order takeout.”
